Question:

Every once in awhile I find myself either out of dog food or like lately, I have wanted to feed my dogs "real food"  I have ended up using baby food vegetables (carrots and green beans).  If I use canned veggies, they just eat around it and leave it in the bowl, especially peas.

Yes, I do know there are many fine dog foods available to buy in a bag or a can. I am not looking for an endorsement, just a general guideline to fall into.

PS My Mom has been bugging me to 'ask ur vet'.

This is a great forum to ask the things I forgot to ask when I was at the clinic.

PSS I have never got one of "those looks" from any of the veterinarians, now from the front desk is another story. Hehe thank you for ur time

Answer:

My recommendation for feeding dogs and cats is to use commercially prepared foods to avoid both excesses as well as deficiency of macro and micro nutrients in their diets.  I think that selection of a diet should start with picking a store that has a fresh and reliable supply of the large commercial brands so you do not find a reason to change foods.  Picking a food from that store and using it with consistency is a benefit to your pets digestion and over all health.
